Why Dolly Parton Needs To Update Her Classic "9 to 5"
My song of the moment is Dolly Parton's 9 to 5. If you don't know it, stop right now and start listening. I love it!
The song was written in 1980 but most of the lyrics hold up today. For example:
"They just use your mind and they never give you credit. It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it."
"It's a rich man's game no matter what they call it. And you spend your life puttin' money in his wallet."
Totally relevant and couldn't be more true.
However, there is one thing that Dolly needs to update. Specifically changing "9 to 5" to "5 to 9."
Let's face it with technology - emails and smart phones - you are never done working.
Take a look at my schedule - I get on the train at 7:30am and start reading and answering emails immediately. Then I work all day "9 to 5." Then I get back on the train - continue to answering emails and then continue to be my phone all night until I go bed at 10pm. So that is a 7am to 10pm situation. IT NEVER ENDS!
What is more crazy is that we do this 5 days a week to only have 2 days off!! Work culture has gone too far.
Not only does this contribute to burnout but also pushes people to look for ways to retire early. Hence why we are on the path to financial independence.
My request to Dolly is that as a working girl in 2019 I am asking you to update your iconic song to "5 to 9."
Nevertheless, I'll be looking forward to 7.5 years from now when my theme song changes to "My Tennessee Mountain Home." ;)
